As part of the DFG-funded Emmy Noether project PLASTICAL, they are seeking highly motivated and dedicated candidates (m/f/d) for a PhD position in environmental sedimentology, with a focus on plastic fragmentation and transport processes in sedimentary systems.Research Associate (m/f/d) in Environmental Sedimentology and Plastic Fragmentation Processes with the possibility of a doctorateDFG Emmy Noether Research GroupThe PLASTICAL project, starting in January 2025, investigates the fragmentation and transport of plastics as well as the release of chemical additives in marine sedimentary systems. It is affiliated with the Collaborative Research Centre (CRC) 1357 Microplastics, which hosts approximately 140 researchers, provides excellent laboratory facilities, and offers outstanding opportunities for international networking and advanced training.
Plastic waste is ubiquitous in sedimentary systems, where it is transported, abraded, and fragmented alongside sediments. The resulting micro- and nanoplastics pose potentially long-term ecotoxicological risks. However, the processes leading to fragmentation and abrasion in sedimentary systems are not yet well understood, nor is their impact on the transport and accumulation of microplastics. In this project, they investigate how plastics fragment and abrade during transport. Laboratory experiments in a specially designed flume will simulate the interaction between different plastic types and sediments. Complementary analyses of samples from German river systems will be conducted to compare laboratory and field results.
The candidate (m/f/d) will design and conduct laboratory experiments on plastic fragmentation, including the simulation of natural transport conditions in a dedicated flume system and the analysis of fragmentation using methods such as SEM and ยต-FT-IR. Additionally, the release of chemical additives will be examined in collaboration with a postdoctoral researcher (m/f/d). Field campaigns for sampling and analyzing plastic particles in river systems will complement the laboratory work. Participation in national and international conferences to present the results is also an essential part of the role. The candidate (m/f/d) will work in close collaboration with project partners and related projects within the DFG-funded CRC 1357 Microplastics. As part of CRC 1357, they will benefit from an interdisciplinary team addressing applied scientific questions and contributing to fundamental research. Furthermore, all PhD candidates will receive individual training through the University of Bayreuth's Graduate School and the structured BayNAT doctoral program "Interdisciplinary Microplastics Sciences," which fosters networking across the involved disciplines.
QualificationsApplicants (m/f/d) must hold a Master's degree (MSc) in geosciences, physical geography, or a related engineering field. Experience or interest in experimental sedimentology and sediment transport processes is desired. The position requires the ability to work independently in both the laboratory and the field, as well as a willingness to collaborate with project partners. Additionally, they expect candidates to demonstrate initiative, a structured approach to work, and enthusiasm for both independent and team-oriented research on a societally relevant topic. Above-average commitment, flexibility, and team spirit are essential. Proficiency in English is required for working in their international environment. The position will be remunerated according to the Collective Agreement for the Public Service of the German Federal States (TV-L E13, 75%). The workplace is Bayreuth, and the position is to be filled as soon as possible. The contract is initially limited to three years. The University of Bayreuth appreciates the diversity of its employees as an enrichment and is expressly committed to the goal of equal opportunities for all genders. Women are strongly encouraged to apply. Applicants (m/f/d) with children are very welcome. The University of Bayreuth is a member of the Best Practice Club "Familie in der Hochschule e.V." and has successfully participated in the HRK audit "Internationalization of the University." Persons with severe disabilities will be given preferential consideration if equally qualified.Your ApplicationPlease apply online with meaningful application documents by and including 23rd February 2025, stating the keyword "PLASTICAL" via their application portal at the University of Bayreuth.
