Description
‘The Sedimentology and Marine Paleoenvironmental Dynamics Group within the Institute of
Earth Sciences, University of Heidelberg, Germany, invites applications for a
PhD position in Paleoceanography / Paleoclimatology
The project is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and aims to decipher the
role of enhanced subsurface heat transport during so-called Heinrich Events (periods of
enhanced ice-sheet instability) in the North Atlantic. Methodologically, the project will be
mainly based on stable oxygen isotope and trace element (Mg/Ca) measurements on
planktonic foraminifera retrieved from two drill cores located in the mid and high-latitude
North Atlantic.
Requirements for applicants are completion of a MSc degree in geosciences or a closely
related discipline prior to appointment and written and spoken fluency in English. Ideally, the
successful candidate should further have a strong background in paleoceanography and
marine micropaleontology as well as an interest in geochemistry. The appointment is for
three years with salary and social security benefits according to a German civil service
position (E 13, 65 %).
‘The University of Heidelberg is committed to increasing the proportion of female scientific
staff, and applications from women are especially welcome. Disabled persons will be given
preference if equally qualified.
Applications (including a CV, a 1-2 page cover letter with a statement of research interests,
and the contact information of two referees) should be sent as a single pdf file to Dr. André
Bahr (E-mail: andre.bahr@geow.uni-heidelberg.de). The closing date for applications is
February 20, 2024. Potential starting date is May 1, 2024.
